A half day south of the city: a 4x4 over the dunes, a board down the slope and the sunset over the Inland Sea on the Saudi border.

More · the afternoon out
The day starts in the city and ends at the edge of Saudi Arabia. You meet your guide at National Museum metro station, exit 1, or at your hotel if you book that option, and drive about 1 hour south by jeep or SUV. Then the tarmac stops and the sand begins.
In the desert the listing keeps a clear rhythm: a photo stop and a camel ride of 15 minutes, 40 minutes of dune bashing, a short photo stop, 20 minutes of sandboarding, and 20 minutes at the Inland Sea for a walk and the sunset. The whole trip, pickup and drop-off included, takes 4 to 5 hours.
Between those stops you spend your time in an air-conditioned 4x4 with local tea and unlimited water. It is a compact way to see the desert and to try sandboarding in Qatar without renting a car, finding a dune or carrying a board from home.
Why this trip
This desert trip from Doha includes an air-conditioned 4x4, a guide, dune bashing, sandboarding, the Inland Sea visit, local tea and unlimited water; hotel pickup, the camel ride and the quad depend on the option you book. It has 5,454 reviews with a rating of 4.82 and starts from $32. Plan on 4 to 5 hours.

More · why these dunes
The trip ends at Khor Al Adaid, an inlet of the Arabian Gulf in the southeast of Qatar, on the border with Saudi Arabia. UNESCO's record describes a tidal lagoon about 15 km from north to south and up to 12 km wide, joined to the Gulf by a channel about 10 km long.
What makes it special is the sand. Qatar's submission to UNESCO says large mobile dunes reach the coast here and spill into the sea beside the lagoon, a combination it describes as having no known parallel in the Middle East or elsewhere. At Khor Al Adaid Beach the dunes reach up to 40 metres.
The area has been a nature reserve since 2007 and is on UNESCO's Tentative List. There is no road to the lagoon, so the last stretch is a 4x4 drive over open sand.

If you want your heart pounding, book this. We started with quad biking, then a calm camel ride, and then the drive over the huge dunes, which was the real highlight.”

Our guide drove safely but still made the run through the desert to the sea exciting. The ATV ride and the camel ride were equally fun for us.”
More · what guests praise
Read the recent reviews and the same themes return: the guide who drives, the photographs and the dunes themselves. Guests praise a driver who is safe yet exciting on the sand, and a guide who takes great pictures of them against the dunes.
The dune bashing comes up often, alongside the sandboarding, the sunset and the stop by the Inland Sea. First-timers describe it as their first desert experience, and one traveler on a layover calls booking it the best decision of the stop.
Reviews also mention the small comforts: the trip running on time, restroom breaks and plenty of drinking water. The listing itself puts the rating at 4.82 from 5,454 reviews and gives it a Top rated badge.

View tourMore · the season
Qatar Tourism names November through April as the best time to visit Khor Al Adaid, when it is neither too hot nor too cool, and recommends October to May for outdoor adventures in general.
The temperatures explain why. At Doha International airport, on the coast 46 km north of the Sealine dunes, the average daily high is 22.6 °C in January and 42.4 °C in July. Winter afternoons in the dunes are warm; summer ones are fierce.
Winter is also Qatar's own desert season. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change set the 2026-2027 winter camping season from 25 October to 20 April, when private camps go up across the sand. Book a weekday if you want the dunes to yourself.

More · the drive
Dune bashing is a roller coaster in a 4x4: up the gentle side of a dune, along the crest and down the steep face. On this trip it lasts 40 minutes. Qatar Tourism says a 4x4 is essential in the desert because there are no paved roads.
The listing gives one clear piece of advice: do not eat in the 2 to 3 hours before the trip, to avoid sickness during the dune bashing. Sit where you can see the horizon, keep your phone away, and sip water between dunes.
Health rules apply. The trip is not suitable for children under 3, pregnant women, people with back problems or wheelchair users. If that rules you out, the desert can wait; a camel ride and a sunset over the lagoon are not worth a sore back.
Your half day
Pick a date, meet at the metro or your hotel, and cancel free up to 24 hours before.
More · booking terms
Read the option before you pay. Hotel pickup, the camel ride and the quad bike ride are each included only if that option is selected, and the quad bike also appears among the things not included. The base trip always has the 4x4, the guide, the dunes, the board and the lagoon.
Flexibility is built in: drop out a full 24 hours ahead or earlier and nothing is charged, the whole sum comes back, and the seat can be held now and settled later. Private or small groups are available if you want the 4x4 to yourselves.
If you fly out the same day, tell the operator the day before, as the listing asks. Cruise passengers have their own meeting point: the Terminal 2 taxi stand at the Doha Cruise Terminal, with the guide calling before pickup.

More · on the board
Sandboarding is the reason this site exists. You strap your feet into a board and ride the steep face of a dune, which holds an angle of about 32 degrees in dry sand. The board's slick base and wax are what make it slide, because sand is not slippery the way snow is.
On this trip you get 20 minutes on the slope. Keep your weight on the back foot, look ahead, and let the board run out on the flat at the bottom. There is no lift, so every run ends with a walk back up the dune with the board under your arm.
Falling is part of it, and dry sand is kind to you: the US National Park Service says injuries are more common on firm, wet sand, while dry sand makes for easier landings. Our guides to the sport explain the board, the technique and the gear in detail.
Warm as a bath
Summer seawater in the lagoon reaches up to and above 33 °C.
Qatar's submission to UNESCO records it, with very low sea temperatures in winter and high salinity; Qatar Tourism calls the Inland Sea calm, warm and safe to swim.
More · what to wear
The listing names the essentials: sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and sports shoes. Shoes matter most, because you climb the dune in them and slide your feet into the board's straps.
Dress for Qatar as well as the desert. Qatar Tourism says visitors are expected to avoid very revealing clothing in public, and that covering shoulders and knees is generally recommended for men and women. Light trousers and a loose shirt with sleeves do both jobs.
In winter, add a layer for the drive back: Qatar Tourism gives winter temperatures between 15 °C and 20 °C. Leave large bags at the hotel, because luggage and large bags are not allowed on the trip.
The practical part
More · the lagoon
The last stop is the reward. Qatar Tourism describes the Inland Sea as a landlocked lagoon where towering dunes meet turquoise water. In the evening the sea recedes and the dunes change colour under the sunset.
The water is safe for swimming: Qatar Tourism calls it calm and warm. This trip's stop is short and its listing names a walk and the sunset, not a swim, so if you hope to get in, ask the operator first and wear swimwear under your clothes.
Look out for birds along the shore. Birdwatchers at Khor Al Adaid Beach note cormorants, terns, gulls, ospreys and flamingos, and oryx and gazelles often wander by. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the light at that hour makes every photo better.
4 to 5 hours. That includes the pickup and the drop-off, the drive about 1 hour each way and the time in the dunes.
20 minutes. It comes after the camel ride and 40 minutes of dune bashing, before the Inland Sea.
Only if your option includes it. The listing includes the camel ride, the quad bike and hotel pickup only if you select those options.
At National Museum metro station. Meet at exit 1, or at your hotel with that option; cruise guests meet at the Terminal 2 taxi stand.
Not on a gentle slope. Dry sand is soft and makes for easier landings if you fall, so it is a kind place to learn.
From age 3, with limits. It is not suitable for children under 3; under 12s ride a camel and under 16s a quad only with an adult.
The water is safe, but this stop is short. Qatar Tourism says it is safe to swim there, in calm, warm water; this trip stops for 20 minutes and lists a walk and the sunset, not a swim.
Nothing for 2 to 3 hours. The listing advises an empty stomach to avoid sickness during the dune bashing.
Yes, up to 24 hours before. Called off a day or more ahead, the booking is refunded in full, and payment can wait until nearer the date.
Dress for it and keep flexible. Summer highs pass 40 °C; with no charge for cancelling up to 24 hours ahead, a bad forecast is easy to dodge.
More · other ways in
This trip is one of many ways into the Doha desert. A night safari sold on Viator spends 120 minutes at a camel camp and on the dunes under the stars before a stop at the lagoon. A quad, buggy, camel and sandboarding tour stops at Sealine Beach Resort for its camel ride.
If you want to drive yourself, look at the quad and buggy trips, but read their terms. One says the quad biking part is your own responsibility and is not covered by insurance. On this trip, children under 16 ride a quad only with an adult.
The comparison table on this page lines up four half-day trips by price, duration, cancellation and guide languages. Our guides cover the night trips, the camel rides and dune bashing in more depth.

More · honest caveats
It suits a first visit to the desert, a long layover or anyone who wants to try sandboarding without planning a whole day. You see the dunes, the board and the lagoon in 4 to 5 hours, pickup and drop-off included.
It is not a desert expedition. The camel ride is 15 minutes, and only if your option includes it, and each activity has its slot in the itinerary. If you want an hour on a camel or a long session on a quad, choose a trip built around that.
And it is not for everyone. The listing rules it out for pregnant women, people with back problems, children under 3 and wheelchair users. For everyone else, it is a well-reviewed half day in one of the more unusual landscapes in the Gulf.
