What to wear for sandboarding in Qatar comes down to four things: closed shoes for hot sand, light clothes that cover shoulders and knees, real sun protection, and a layer for winter evenings.

Quick answer
Shoes matter more than anything else you wear. One Doha sunset safari states that sports shoes are required for sandboarding, and a dune safari repeats the rule. Our recommended trip lists sports shoes among the things to bring.
The reason is the sand. The US National Park Service, writing about its own dune field, says sand surfaces can pass 150 degrees F on summer afternoons and that boots or tennis shoes are needed then, because sandals are not adequate.2 Straps on a sandboard also hold a shoe far better than a bare foot or a flip-flop.
Choose shoes you do not mind filling with sand: light trainers or running shoes with a snug fit are ideal. Hiking boots work but feel heavy on the climb back up the dune. Bring a spare pair of socks for the drive back, and knock the sand out before you get back into the car. If you plan to swim at the lagoon, a pair of cheap water shoes in your bag saves your feet from shells and hot sand at the waterline.

A sandboarding outfit for Qatar has two jobs: keep you cool and respect local customs. Qatar Tourism says visitors, men as well as women, are expected to avoid very revealing clothing in public, and that covering shoulders and knees is generally recommended.1
The desert listings point the same way. One sunset safari recommends casual, loose clothing in summer, and an Inland Sea tour asks for comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for sand and outdoor activities. Our recommended trip simply lists comfortable clothes.
In practice that means light trousers or long shorts, a loose shirt or T-shirt with sleeves, and nothing you would mind getting sandy. Light colors stay cooler in the sun; fabrics that dry quickly are useful if you swim at the Inland Sea. Leave white clothes at home if you do not want them tinted by the dunes. Pockets with zips are worth more than any fashion detail, because loose change, keys and lip balm tend to vanish into the sand on the first fall.

visitors (men as well as women) are expected to show respect for local culture by avoiding excessively revealing clothing in public. It is generally recommended for men and women to ensure their shoulders and knees are covered.
There is no shade on a dune. Qatar Tourism advises applying sunscreen generously and wearing polarised sunglasses to reduce the glare in the desert.3 Our recommended trip lists sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen as things to bring.
Glare off pale sand is strong even in winter. Sunglasses that wrap around the face also keep blowing sand out of your eyes, which matters on the board and in a moving car with the window open. A cap or hat with a strap stays on when you fall; a loose straw hat will end up halfway down the slope.
Reapply sunscreen after a swim and before the sandboarding, and do not forget the back of your neck and your ears, which face the sun when you look down at your feet. An Inland Sea tour asks you to bring water to stay hydrated as well. A lip balm with sun protection is a small item worth its place in the bag after an afternoon in the wind.

Dress for the season you travel in. Qatar Tourism gives winter temperatures between 15 °C and 20 °C, and average lows at Doha airport fall to 14.3 °C in January.64 One sunset safari recommends a jacket in winter.
On a winter trip that ends after sunset, pack a sweater or light jacket and long trousers; the afternoon will feel warm, the drive back will not. From October to April, a thin layer in your bag covers the change from sun to evening. Night trips need it more than day trips: the air cools once the sun has gone, and you sit still at the camp for longer than you move.
Summer is the opposite problem. Average highs at Doha airport reach 42.4 °C in July.4 Wear the lightest clothing that still covers shoulders and knees, add a scarf or buff you can wet, and keep a full water bottle within reach. Our recommended trip includes unlimited water.
Several trips stop long enough for a swim. Qatar Tourism says it is safe to swim at the Inland Sea, where the water is calm and warm, and one Inland Sea tour allows swimming for a short time.5
Put the swimsuit on at the hotel, pack a small towel, and keep a dry layer for afterwards. At a remote lagoon there is nowhere private to change, so a long T-shirt or a wrap that you can pull on over wet swimwear is the practical answer.
Remember the dress rules on the way back. Once you are out of the water, cover up again before the drive back into Doha and any stop on the way, as Qatar Tourism asks visitors to avoid very revealing clothing in public.1
Keep it small. Our recommended trip does not allow luggage or large bags, and pets are not allowed either. A small backpack or a waist bag with a zip holds everything you need: phone, a little cash, sunscreen, sunglasses and a spare layer.
Bring some cash. Qatar Tourism notes that a tip of 10-15% is appreciated and advises carrying cash for tipping.7 An Inland Sea tour suggests a camera for the views; a phone in a zipped pocket or a pouch on a lanyard survives the dune bashing better than one in your hand.
Leave behind anything that dislikes sand: expensive jewelry, open bags, and white trainers you want to keep white. Sand gets into everything during a dune session, and the more you leave in your hotel room, the less you will find in your pockets next week. A plastic bag for wet swimwear and sandy shoes keeps the rest of your bag clean on the way home.
The rest of the safari shapes your outfit too. Long, light trousers are more comfortable than shorts on a camel saddle, and our recommended trip includes a camel ride if you book that option. Tie back long hair before the dune bashing, and wear nothing loose around your neck in the 4x4.
On a quad or buggy, closed shoes and long sleeves protect you from sand thrown up by the machine in front. If you are handed a helmet, a thin cap underneath keeps it comfortable and stops sand sticking to your hair.
Finally, think about the photos. Plain, bright colors stand out against the cream of the dunes, and a scarf worn loosely over the shoulders doubles as sand protection and a splash of color in every picture by the lagoon. Ask your guide to take the group shots, so you can stay in the frame rather than behind the camera.
