The short version: late autumn to spring

Qatar Tourism names November through April as the best time to visit Khor Al Adaid, when the weather is neither too hot nor too cool, and the Inland Sea is where the trips on this site end.1 For outdoor adventures in general it gives a wider window, from October to May.2

The figures behind that advice are clear. At Doha International airport, average daily highs are 24.8 °C in December, 22.6 °C in January and 24 °C in February, against 42.4 °C in July.3 Those are readings from a coastal airport 46 km north of the Sealine dunes, so treat them as a close guide rather than the temperature on the sand.3

The tours themselves run all year, and the operator of our recommended trip lists no closed season. What changes with the months is how comfortable the afternoon feels, how hot the sand is under your feet when you climb back up with the board, and how pleasant the stop by the lagoon is. A trip that feels like a gentle outing in January can be an endurance test in July, even though the itinerary on the booking page is exactly the same.

Winter: November to February

Winter is the season Qatar Tourism promotes for being outdoors: from November to February, with sunny skies and temperatures between 15 °C and 20 °C.67 January is usually the coolest month, and what little rain Qatar gets falls mainly in winter.9

At Doha airport the average daily low falls to 16.3 °C in December, 14.3 °C in January and 15 °C in February.3 Afternoons in the dunes are warm, but the drive back after sunset can feel cool, especially on a night or sunset trip, so pack a light jacket; one sunset safari recommends a jacket in winter.

Winter also brings Qatar's own desert season. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change set the 2026-2027 winter camping season from 25 October to 20 April, when private camps go up across the desert, including around Sealine.510 Pick a weekday if you want the dunes to yourself, and book early in the season if you have fixed dates.

Spring and autumn: the shoulder months

March and November are sweet spots if you want warm water at the Inland Sea without summer heat. Average highs at Doha airport are 27.7 °C in March and 29.8 °C in November, with lows of 17.6 °C and 21.2 °C.3

April and October are noticeably hotter. Highs average 33.1 °C in April and 35.6 °C in October, and nights stay warm at 21.9 °C and 25.8 °C.3 Both months still fall inside Qatar Tourism's outdoor season, and an afternoon start that ends with the sunset over the lagoon avoids the hottest hours.2 In these months the sandboarding feels best in the last hour of light, when the face of the dune has cooled a little.

Day length follows the season. By our own calculation for Sealine, the sun is up for about 10.6 hours in mid-December and 13.7 hours in mid-June.3 Plan a winter sunset trip with that shorter day in mind.

Seasons in Qatar: temperature and climate by month

Nothing loads until you tap play.

Summer: June to September

Summer is hot. Average daily highs at Doha airport are 42.1 °C in June, 42.4 °C in July, 41.3 °C in August and 39.1 °C in September, and lows stay between 29.1 °C and 31.3 °C.3 Britannica describes June to September as hot and humid, with daytime temperatures as high as 50 °C.13

Qatar Tourism points visitors toward museums, shopping and indoor experiences from June to September, as an escape from the heat.8 It notes occasional humidity in summer, especially on the coast, which is where the dunes meet the sea.14

Desert tours still run, and if summer is your only chance, go late in the day. The National Park Service, writing about another dune field, warns that sand surfaces can pass 150 degrees F on summer afternoons and advises the early morning or the evening.1115 Wear closed shoes, drink constantly and keep the sandboarding short. Climbing a dune with a board in that heat is hard work, and there is no shame in stopping after a run or two and watching from the car.

The water at the Inland Sea through the year

A swim in the lagoon is one of the pleasures of a desert trip, and Qatar Tourism says the Inland Sea is safe to swim in, with calm, warm water.16 Qatar's submission to UNESCO records summer seawater temperatures up to and occasionally above 33 °C, and very low sea temperatures in winter.17

That puts the comfortable swimming months at the edges of the season. In spring and autumn the water is warm and the air bearable; in midwinter you may prefer to paddle rather than swim; in midsummer the sea brings little relief from the heat.

Tides change the scene too. Qatar Tourism describes the water advancing onto the desert in the morning at Khor Al Adaid Beach and receding in the evening, when the dunes change color under the sunset.18 An afternoon trip catches the falling tide and the best light. Bring swimwear from October to April and decide at the shore.

Ramadan, weekends and booking

Ramadan shifts through the calendar each year, and it affects the day rather than the desert. Qatar Tourism asks visitors not to eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours in Ramadan.12 On a desert trip, keep your water and snacks discreet before sunset and ask your operator whether timings change during the month.

The cool season is also Qatar's camping season, with private camps across the desert, and in the season before last the ministry counted 2,860 camps.19 A weekday trip, or an earlier start, is the quieter choice.

Book with a cancellation window that suits the weather. On our recommended trip, pulling out is free while 24 hours or more remain, and the payment itself can wait, which leaves room to watch the forecast for wind and sand before you commit. If a dusty, windy day is forecast, moving the trip by a day is cheap insurance for clearer views over the lagoon.

Day, sunset or night: matching the trip to the month

In the cool months any trip works, so pick by the sights you are after. A daytime safari gives you the colors of the dunes and the turquoise of the lagoon; our recommended trip fits dune bashing, sandboarding, the Inland Sea and, with that option, a camel ride into 4 to 5 hours. On a winter afternoon that schedule is comfortable from start to finish.

In the shoulder months a sunset trip is the smart compromise. One sunset safari runs 5 hours and ends with 20 minutes at Inland Sea Beach for the sunset, after the camel, the dunes and the board. You do the active part as the heat fades and finish in the best light of the day.

In summer, think about the night. A night safari from Doha lasts 4 hours and puts the camel camp, the dune drive and the lagoon after dark. The air at Doha airport still averages lows of 31.3 °C in July, so the night is warm, but you avoid the sun entirely.3
