A camel ride in Doha is usually part of a desert safari: a short walk on a dromedary near Sealine or in the dunes, between the 4x4 and the board. Here is how long it lasts, which trip gives you most time, and more.

What a camel ride near Doha is really like
Set your expectations first. A camel ride on a desert safari from Doha is a short, guided walk on a dromedary, not a trek. The trips compared here list rides from 5 minutes on a quad and sandboard safari to 15 minutes on our main safari, and one dune safari calls its ride brief, 10 minutes at most.
That is still enough to feel the strange, rolling motion of the animal. A camel kneels for you to climb on, then rises back legs first, tipping you forward before the front legs straighten. Hold the saddle horn, lean back both as it stands and as it kneels, and the rest is a slow sway across the sand. You sit higher than you expect, and the view over the dunes from up there is part of the fun.
Qatar Tourism counts camel rides, together with falcon experiences, as the traditional side of a desert safari, next to the 4x4 rides, quad biking and sandboarding.2 It also makes the classic photograph of a Qatar desert day: a dromedary, a dune and the sky.

Where the rides happen: Sealine and the dunes
On the trips compared here the camel rides happen close to the coast south of Doha. The trip this page recommends stops at Sealine Beach Resort for a break with coffee, tea, a camel ride, a walk and camp activities, for 30 minutes in all. The Inland Sea tour with all activities has its tea and camel ride at the same resort.
Sealine itself lies 55 kilometers south of central Doha, where Qatar's east coast meets the dunes.3 Other trips put the camel ride at Mesaieed, after a quad session, or at a campsite on the way to the lagoon.
Further south, camels belong to the landscape. Qatar's submission to UNESCO for Khor Al Adaid notes that the old farming and fishing settlements are virtually gone but that some camel grazing still continues around the reserve.4

Why we recommend the quad, camel and sandboard trip
For a camel tour from Doha that also gives you the dunes, the quad, buggy, camel and sandboarding tour is our pick. It is rated 4.97 from 3,947 reviews, starts from $22, and lasts 4 to 4.5 hours; the live guide speaks English and Arabic. Its 30-minute stop at Sealine Beach Resort includes the camel ride.
The rest of the afternoon is full. After Sealine it lists 30 minutes in the Mesaieed dunes for sandboarding, dune bashing and off-road driving, then 30 minutes at the Inland Sea for dune bashing, a swim and the sunset. Pickup is at National Museum metro station, exit 2, with drop-off at Doha Port, in Doha or at the metro.
Read one line twice: the quad biking part is your own responsibility, and damage, injuries or lost items during it are not covered by insurance. You can call the booking off at no cost until 24 hours ahead, and a place can be held now and paid for later.

Desert safari tour in Doha, Qatar: camel ride, dune bashing, sandboarding and the Inland Sea
Nothing loads until you tap play.
On our main safari the camel is an option
Our site's main trip, the safari with sandboarding and the Inland Sea, lists a photo stop with a camel ride of 15 minutes. Its inclusions add a condition: the camel ride is included if that option is selected. If the camel matters to you, check that the option you book carries it.
The rest of that trip is generous on the dunes: 40 minutes of dune bashing, 20 minutes of sandboarding and 20 minutes at the Inland Sea for the sunset. It is the most reviewed desert safari from Doha, with 5,454 reviews at 4.82.
Other listings put the camel in a short break. A quad, camel and Inland Sea tour lists a 15-minute break with the camel ride at Mesaieed, and a quad or buggy trip lists tea and a camel ride for 15 minutes. Compare those minutes with the price before you decide. A cheaper trip with a short camel break can still be the right choice if the dunes and the board are what you came for.
Children, health and comfort
Children can ride with a grown-up on the trips compared here. On our main safari children under 12 cannot ride a camel alone and ride with an adult; a sunset safari sets the same rule. A dune safari says children under 12 may ride camels or quads only with adults.
The camel ride is the gentle part of a safari, but the trip around it is not. The dune bashing that comes with it is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or children under 3 on our main safari. If that rules out the 4x4 for you, a camel ride alone is not a reason to book.
Wear long, light trousers if you can; the saddle blanket is rough on bare legs, and you sit astride. Keep your camera on a strap, because the camel's rise and fall is sudden, and tip the handler if you want photos of the camel's head close up. Sunglasses on a cord are a good idea too, since the ride is bumpier than it looks.
The dromedary: Arabia's riding camel
The camel you ride in Qatar is a dromedary, the one-humped Arabian riding camel; Britannica calls it a swift species that today exists only in domestic herds.1 It was domesticated in Arabia about 3000-2000 BCE.14 Camels are about 3 m long and 2 m high at the hump, and males weigh 400 to 650 kg.5
The hump holds fat, not water. When food is plentiful, camels store fat on the back to form the hump, and when the fat is used up it sags.15 When they do drink, a camel's body rehydrates within minutes, absorbing over 100 litres in 5-10 minutes.7
They are faster than they look on a tour. Racing dromedaries can reach 65 km per hour over short distances, and dromedaries have been known to carry a rider 185 km in less than 11 hours.6 A camel paces, moving both legs on one side together, which explains the rocking you feel in the saddle.16 Camels can live to about 40 years, so the animal under you may have carried visitors for decades.8
Making the most of a short ride
Because the ride is short, timing matters more than length. A camel ride in the late afternoon, with the sun low and long shadows on the sand, gives you better photographs than a ride at noon. Sunset trips schedule the camel early in the afternoon and the lagoon for the last light.
Ask before you photograph the handlers, and keep your hands away from the camel's mouth. Camels are calm with people who move slowly; a sudden lunge for a selfie stick is the quickest way to make one grumble and stand up early.
If a few minutes in the saddle leave you wanting more, the night safaris from Doha also offer a camel ride, at a camp after dark. Our night page compares them, with their timings and the Inland Sea stop that many of them add at the end.
